She headlined the main Pyramid Stage, making her one of a handful of women to do so over the past 40 years.

Beyonce played all her biggest hits and a medley of Destiny’s Child songs and got a great reception from the crowd.

The 29-year-old opened her set with Crazy In Love and afterwards told the audience: “I want you all to know right now you’re witnessing my dream.”

“I always wanted to be a rock star and tonight we are all rock stars,” she added.

But there was no appearance on stage from her husband Jay-Z, who headlined Glastonbury in 2008.

The couple were spotted watching Coldplay perform on Saturday and there were rumours Jay-Z may join her on stage.

It is believed Beyonce has spent the last three weeks in the UK, at a rehearsal studio in London. She is supported on stage by backing singers The Mamas.

Beyonce arrived on stage to a burst of fireworks and her first words to the crowd were: “Glastonbury, are you ready?”

Her 90-minute set included all her signature songs, including Single Ladies, Independent Women, Halo and If I Was A Boy.

But she also paid homage to several other artists, with her own versions of Alanis Morissette’s You Oughta Know, the Eurythmics’ Sweet Dreams and Kings of Leon’s Sex On Fire.

She was joined on stage by Bristolian artist Tricky for Baby Boy.

Many fans gave rave reviews of Beyonce’s performance.

“The best performance she has ever done in her life, she is my idol,” said Lucy Horton, of Bath.

Pete Andrew, from Devon, watched the last 20 minutes of the gig having watched US rock band Queens of the Stone Age on another stage.

“If it didn’t clash with anything then we would have turned up to see it earlier,” he said.

Beyonce was something of a controversial headline choice for some fans who think its further indication that Glastonbury is becoming more mainstream.

But Mr Andrew countered: “If it’s what people want to hear, then that’s what should be on.”

Jay Z’s announcement as a headliner at a predominantly rock music festival two years ago, sparked a debate over rap music’s place at Glastonbury – spearheaded by Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher.

Suzanne Vega, who was the first woman to headline at Glastonbury in 1989, headlined on the acoustic stage at the same time as Beyonce.

Elsewhere on the site, artists like Plan B, Paul Simon and Brit winner Laura Marling played to crowd basking in some hot sunshine.

After a wet start to the weekend, its estimated temperatures reached up to 25C on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Christopher Shale, chairman of West Oxfordshire Conservative Association and a friend of David Cameron, was found dead at the festival on Worthy Farm, Somerset.

The 56-year-old was found in a portable toilet in one of the inter-stage hospitality areas.

A rebel spokesman in the Nafusa mountains said there had been heavy fighting on the outskirts of the strategic town of Bir al-Ghanam.

The rebels told the BBC they were making a push for Tripoli.

Meanwhile the International Criminal Court is to decide whether to issue an arrest warrant for Col Gaddafi.

A decision by a three-judge panel is expected at 1100 GMT. The ICC’s chief prosecutor has also requested arrest warrants for Col Gaddafi’s son, Saif al-Islam, and the head of Libyan intelligence, Abdullah Senussi.

The warrants are for alleged crimes against humanity committed against opponents of the regime.

The international military operation in Libya entered its 100th day on Monday, with the rebels still struggling to take advantage of coalition air strikes on Col Gaddafi’s infrastructure.

The Libyan news agency reported fresh strikes on Tripoli overnight.

‘Consolidating gains’
 
The rebels control the east of the country as well as pockets of western Libya, including the Nafusa mountains.

Guma el-Gamaty, a spokesman for the rebels’ National Transitional Council (NTC), told AP news agency that Bir al-Ghanam – the focus of the latest fighting – was important as it was barely 30km (18 miles) south of Zawiya, a western gateway to Tripoli.

Opposition fighters seized Zawiya in March before government troops drove the rebels out of the oil-refinery city. Fighting again broke out there this month.

The BBC’s Mark Doyle, who is in the village of Bir Ayad near Bir al-Ghanam, says Sunday’s fighting began when government forces tried to cut off the rebels by attacking from behind.

Clashes continued in the distance, where the boom of artillery, the rattle of automatic gunfire and the occasional rumble of Nato jets could be heard, he says.

A medic said two rebels had died in the battle. The rebels said government forces suffered far greater casualties, although that cannot be confirmed.

The rebels came down into the plains from the Nafusa mountains in early June, adds our correspondent. But they have met strong resistance from Col Gaddafi’s forces.

He says that although it is a shifting front line, the rebels appear to be gradually consolidating their position in the mountains.

 The minister of defence for Libya’s rebels, Jalal al-Dgheli, told the BBC that because their weapons were so limited, most of them were focused on the push from the western mountains towards Tripoli.

But in the near future there could be an advance from the east near Brega towards Tripoli, he told the BBC’s Bridget Kendall in the rebel stronghold of Benghazi.

“What we’re learning from defectors is that Gaddafi’s supporters are getting fewer, people who are close to him are abandoning him, and his inner circle is getting smaller by the day.”

He added that he hoped Col Gaddafi could be gone by the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, in August, but our correspondent said this could be wishful thinking.

‘Election proposal’
 
The Libyan government on Sunday meanwhile reportedly renewed its offer for a vote on whether Col Gaddafi should stay in power.

Gaddafi spokesman Moussa Ibrahim was quoted as telling reporters in Tripoli that the government was proposing a period of national dialogue and an election overseen by the UN and African Union.

“If the Libyan people decide Gaddafi should leave he will leave,” Mr Ibrahim was quoted by Reuters news agency as saying. “If the people decide he should stay he will stay.”

But he said Col Gaddafi – who has run the oil-producing country since a military coup in 1969 – would not go into exile.

The idea of holding an election was first raised earlier this month by Saif al-Islam Gaddafi.

Since then Italy has called for a political settlement to the conflict, following a Nato strike in Tripoli on 19 June that killed several civilians.

In a separate development, African leaders meeting in Pretoria said Col Gaddafi has agreed to stay out of talks aimed at ending the conflict.

In a communique after talks on Sunday, the African Union panel on Libya said it welcomed “Col Gaddafi’s acceptance of not being part of the negotiations process”.

The BIS warned low cost of borrowing had resulted in a credit and property price boom that was fuelling inflation, especially in emerging economies.

Central banks across the globe have cut interest rates in an attempt to boost growth after the 2008 financial crisis.

However, BIS warned that the policy may prove to be counterproductive.

“The prolonged period of very low interest rates entails the risk of creating serious financial distortions, misallocations of resources and delay in the necessary deleveraging in those advanced countries most affected by the crisis,” the bank said in its annual report.

‘Inflation fighting credibility’
 
While loose monetary policies and availability of easy credit have triggered growth, there has been a flip side to it as well.

Emerging economies, especially in Asia, have had to deal with rising prices for food and other essential commodities.

This has pushed up the cost of living and has threatened to derail growth in many developing nations.

The BIS warned that the central banks needed to change their policies in order to deal with the situation.

“Tighter global monetary policy is needed in order to contain inflation pressures and ward off financial stability risks,” it said.

“It is also crucial if central banks are to preserve their hard-won inflation fighting credibility,” the bank added.

Asset bubbles

 One of the biggest concerns that economists and analysts have about low interest rates is the formation of asset bubbles.

They have warned that availability of easy credit and low interest rates are driving up property prices to unsustainable levels.

“Property prices in a number of emerging market economies are advancing at staggeringly rapid rates, and private sector indebtedness is rising fast,” the BIS said.

It also warned that the trend was very similar to that triggered the global financial crisis.

“Emerging market economies managed to escape the worst of the crisis, but many now run the risk of building up imbalances very similar to those seen in advanced economies in the lead-up to the crisis,” the bank said.

The BIS warned that the surge in property prices had resulted in over development in the real estate market, leaving large numbers of properties unsold.

“It will take years to absorb this overhang,” the bank said.

The bank warned that if not addressed immediately, a crash in the property market may derail economic growth in emerging economies.

“All financial crises, especially those generated by a credit-fuelled property price boom, leave long-lasting wreckage,” the bank said.

Ingredients

1 6-lb beef rib roast
1 Tbsp. anise seeds, lightly crushed
3 Tbsp. olive oil
3 Tbsp. Dijon-style mustard
3 cloves garlic, minced
3 cups dried figs, apricots, and/or pears
1/4 tsp. ground black pepper
12 red boiling onions, peeled and halved
2-1/3 cups orange juice
3 fresh pears, cut into wedges
1 Tbsp. all-purpose flour

Directions

1.Preheat oven to 325F. Trim fat from beef. In bowl, combine anise, oil, 2 tablespoons mustard, garlic, 3/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper; set aside 3 tablespoons oil mixture. Place beef on rack in a shallow roasting pan. Spread remaining oil mixture on top and sides. Roast 1-1/3 to 2-1/4 hours for medium-rare (135F internal) or 2-1/4 to 2-3/4 hours for medium (150F).

2.Meanwhile, combine dried fruit, onions, 1/3 cup juice, and reserved oil mixture. Fold 18×36-inch heavy foil in half to 18-inch square; place fruit mixture in center. Doublefold opposite foil edges, leaving room for steam. The last 1 hour of roasting time place packet beside roast. The last 30 minutes place pears in pan beside roast; stir once.

3.Transfer roast and pears to platter; cover, let stand 15 minutes. Remove foil packet from oven; set aside. Reserve 1 tablespoon fat in roasting pan; whisk flour into fat. Whisk 2 cups juice with 1 tablespoon mustard; add to pan. Place pan over two burners on medium-high heat. Whisk until thickened and bubbly, scraping up browned bits; whisk 1 to 2 minutes more. Strain; serve with beef,fruits, and onion. Garnish with rosemary.

Research in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found those who ate a low-fat diet that contained lots of fruit and vegetables lowered their risk of dying over 10 years.

The study compared the diets of 2,500 US adults aged 70 to 79.

Those who ate a high fat diet rich in ice cream, cheese, and whole milk, had the highest risk of death.

The study showed that 12 extra people in every hundred survived over the ten years, if they ate healthily.

Participants were split into six different groups, according to how often they ate certain foods.

The groups were: healthy foods; high-fat diary products; meat, fried foods and alcohol; breakfast cereal; refined grains and sweets and desserts.

Those who had a “healthy foods” diet ate more low-fat dairy products, fruit, whole grains, poultry, fish, and vegetables.

People in this group had healthier lifestyles too; smoking less and being more active than other participants.

They also ate lower amounts of meat, fried foods, sweets, high-calorie drinks, and added fat.

The “high fat dairy products” cluster ate more ice cream, cheese and whole milk and yogurt. They ate less poultry, low fat dairy products, rice, and pasta.

Researchers found that those who followed a predominantly high fat, dairy products diet, had a higher death risk than those in the healthy food group.

No significant differences in death risk were seen between the “healthy foods” eaters and the “breakfast cereal” or “refined grains” eaters.

Lead researcher, Dr Amy Anderson, from the University of Maryland, said the results suggest “older adults who …consume relatively high amounts of vegetables, fruit, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, poultry and fish, may have a lower risk of mortality”.

Saturated fat
 
British dietitian Lucy Jones, who is a spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association, said that saturated fat and trans fatty acids (a type of fat found in processed foods) were a common factor for those in the higher risk groups.

“The most harmful food groups appear to be the ‘sweets and desserts’ group and the ‘high fat dairy group’ in terms of risk of death,” she said.

“These groups are both high in saturated fat and trans fatty acids in addition to calories, contributing to obesity and high cholesterol.”

However, she noted that participants were not controlled for their weight and body mass index, which, she said, could mean that the increased risk of death was linked to being overweight.

If exploited by a booby-trapped webpage the bug would allow attackers to take control of an unprotected computer.

Code to exploit the bug has already been published though Microsoft said it had no evidence it was currently being used by hi-tech criminals.

A workaround for the bug has been produced while Microsoft works on a permanent fix.

Code injection
 
The bug revolves around the way that IE manages a computer’s memory when processing Cascading Style Sheets – a widely used technology that defines the look and feel of pages on a website.

Hi-tech criminals have long known that they can exploit IE’s memory management to inject their own malicious code into the stream of instructions a computer processes as a browser is being used. In this way the criminals can get their own code running and hijack a PC.

Microsoft has produced updates that improves memory management but security researchers discovered that these protection systems are not used when some older parts of Windows are called upon.

In a statement Microsoft said it was “investigating” the bug and working on a permanent fix. In the meantime it recommended those concerned use a protection system known as the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit.

Installing and applying the toolkit may require Windows XP users to update the version of the operating system they are using. But even if they do that some of the protection it bestows on Windows 7 and Vista users will not be available.

“We’re currently unaware of any attacks trying to use the claimed vulnerability or of customer impact,” said Dave Forstrom, the director of Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing group, in a statement.

“As vulnerabilities go, this kind is the most serious as it allows remote execution of code,” said Rik Ferguson, senior security analyst at Trend Micro, “This means the attacker can run programs, such as malware, directly on the victim’s computer.”

He added: “It is highly reminiscent of a vulnerability at the same time two years ago which prompted several national governments to warn against using IE and to switch to an alternative browser.”
